Exciting launch of new architectural glass design options!

Thursday 14th February 2013

‘Stunning contemporary glass-art windows and screens that incorporate photographic images and architectural psychology'.

Bath Aqua Glass’s Architectural and stained glass designer Themis Mikellides invites you to the launch of their contemporary art-glass windows at London’s Grand Design show this May. This launch showcases ‘state of the art’ double & triple glazing that include photographic screen-printed images that are projected from one face of glass onto the next and create a three dimensional interactive image.

These units can be used to create stunning interior screens & architectural windows for public art or obscuring a grim outlook. Featured at E61of the ‘Design Arcade’ is a sample that shows off its potential by giving the viewer the experience of woodland. Essential viewing Up until now, with the exception of glass sculpture, experiencing three-dimensional glass art has only been possible by visiting ‘art installations’.

Now developed into contemporary architectural glass, it is offered with a bespoke design service. Allowing daylight and colour to enter a building is an essential quality to sustainable building design. It has been well documented that environments that incorporate the aesthetics of light and colour greatly enhances the psychological happiness and wellbeing of its occupants. Using this three-dimensional glazing, one can partially engage or fully block any undesirable view, an ideal solution for creating light yet private spaces.

Our unique glazing and screening incorporates many aspects of Architectural Psychology. This is the study of buildings, light and colour and the psychological effects they have on us. This includes the use of the internationally recognised Natural Colour System, (N.C.S.), for colour reference and design.

As a building material, glass is interactive with sunlight and influences the interior quality of buildings more than any other construction material. Our glass can be used as an ideal solution for combating solar glare. With an environmental concern, all our externally glazed units incorporate energy saving laminated Low E glass, maximising their environmental credentials. Our units are made to the highest standards with materials that promote longevity. They are an industry compliant double and triple glazed window and screen system, ideal for interior designers and architects alike and comply with British standards regulations and European Harmonised Norms.

From an early age Themis has been inspired by his father Byron Mikellides an international pioneer in the field of Architectural Psychology. This exposure to the world of architectural psychology, and international colour conferences, has given him an intuitive and scientific background to his use of colour in his architectural stained glass. He has recently completed an MA in Glass and continues to research and develop the marriage of art and technology.

As a founder member of Bath Aqua Glass Themis has undertaken commissioned works including pieces for public art projects in municipality buildings, schools & hospitals, reflective windows for worship, domestic sites and gallery orientated wall art. Themis is frequently commissioned for public and private works both in England and abroad. Recent international commissions range from medieval windows for a private chapel in Port Harcourt, Nigeria to contemporary windows for Washington and Alaska.

Making Of A Stained Glass Window and a Mamma Mia Wedding

Annette Martin speaking.....

When I tell people my daughter is getting married in a mountain village in Corsica they all exclaim MAMMA MIA!

I got quite defensive in the beginning but thinking about it I did meet my daughter's father in the 70's pure ABBA time and i will be attending the wedding with my not so new partner. My ex-husband did not know his Corsican family until me and my present partner Adrian (alias Mr Darcy) found them on a holiday to Corsica. They are fantastic and my daughter loves them dearly. The village of Pruno is a shory drive south of Bastia in the chestnut land which is true Corsican heartlands.

We are making a stained glass window for the village church. The window depicts a pregnant Virgin Mary the night before she gives birth with a Corsican landscape behind her. The window will go in the week before the wedding which is on the 10th April. We will be singing English songs and the Corsicans will be singing their national songs. It looks to be a wonderful wedding with all sorts of characters. My ex-husband has met all the corsican family but is yet to meet his mother there is a lot of family pain and we are hoping the wedding wll bring everyone together.

Our First Blog!!

Here we are at the beginning of our day, the glory holes are fired and the blowers are in action.......Hot Stuff!! We feel everyday we are preserving ancient glass making techniques, glassblowing, glass fusing, stained glass and we do it with style.

We all count ourselves very lucky to work with glass which portrays the truest form of colour by lighting it up. We are the obsidian team of the UK. We are guardians of an amazing window with designs by William Burgess which is on display in The Theatre of Glass, Walcot Street, Bath. Walcot street is the artisan area of Bath and has been since Roman times.

Watch out for our next blog which will tell you all about the Corsican stained glass window we will be making..................
